I have now made it a personal mission to find the compete footage of Abner Jay’s performance.
In some bygone era of my early adolescence I wandered into a show in Denver, luckily I was hanging out with a punctual crowd and we arrived in time for the opening act: The Centimeters. Now some 8 years later I sometimes credit this as one of the most serendipitous moments as a music loving person. It was here that Nora Keyes gorgeous shrieking vibrato slapped me across my being and continued to echo through the years.
The voice is an instrument, and often taken for granted as such, as it is also a gift that not everyone can possess. To find one wielded with the originality, skill and control of Nora Keyes is rare. Over the years she has evolved, branching from co-singer for the Centimeters and earlier projects, to solo performance and now in her current incarnation she is settling into her rightful position as front woman for Fancy Space People. It is here with Don Bolles a band has been formed to channel light from the cosmos to create the music for our age: every moment is a culmination, formed into a lush, yet rustic expanse that is hopeful, yet uncertain of this future-is-now-world in which we live. They are not mourning the lost possibilities of today, instead they have created their own universe. The band’s self-titled anthem Fancy Space People calls for the space people to save the Earth from humans, and yet, in Pyramids Shoot Golden Rays we are comforted with the sentiment that “These are not the final days, color out the gray.”
If the nineties found that sarcasm is indeed the chasm of sorrow, and the first ten years of the 2000s were an era of interconnected disconnectedness, perhaps Fancy Space People are harbingers of the new universe in which we realize that we are made of the stars, we are celestial and earthly, we are a continuum and linked with each other and the expanse of all existence. Go forth Fancy Space People! It is my most sincere hope that you continue your broadcast of this cosmic mixtape you have received from the great beyond!
Rest in Peace, Charlie
I really wish I could find the original video, but a search for blonde woman on pyramid comes back with some unsavory results.
Tomorrow is 1/11/11 this sort of thing won’t happen until 11/1/11 and again 10 days later on 11/11/11
